Social Network – a post from the past

I first tried out blogging in 2009 with an amatuar, “teenage” diary style account on blogger. However one post on there is worth a read so I’m sharing it on my more mature wordpress blog. Enjoy.

Oh the joys of social networking.
For some people it’s a fun way of communication.
For others its a study of human behaviour.
Others, it’s a passion of some sort to share and expand their views.

For me?

Social networking fasinates me. I find myself hooked by the bug to get more followers, more views, more friends. Then I think.. why do I want people reading stuff about me? Why do I want to be telling them?

Facebook. I keep for my private social communication. My only facebook friends are friends I have in the “real world”.

Twitter. A public place of expression and sharing without delving into detail. Followers are automatically accepted. Tweets are viewed by everyone and anyone that wishes to. And word limit is in place to prevent flooding, ranting etc.

Blogger(my previous, first blog). Is this my personal journal? My online diary to save carrying a book form? Or it is something I wish for people to see? As it stands I have no followers on blogger. Therefore blogger remains private. But if people were to follow me? I think I’d allow them to see.

Where has the desire and need for privacy in human kind gone? Has it gone?

Is the world becoming a place where every detail, comment and expression is shared for others to see?

Fireworks at Alton Towers

My recent adventures have seen me at Alton Towers for their last day open before Winter closing!

The park stayed open for 2 hours after the firework display so you can ride in the dark.

Well I am a person that does not like rides at all!! I don’t like drops, falling, any of the weird feelings. And if I stick my head out of the car window I can’t breath through the force of the wind so imagine me on ride like Oblivion!! I think I’d be unconscious before the bottom of it.

But the tickets were cheap, I love the atmosphere and I do like some rides!!

Well it was a brilliant day! The fireworks are nothing like I’ve ever seen before!! It’s all computerised and synced to music and it’s just fantastic. The music choice is brilliant and it lasts for 20minutes!!

After the fireworks I fancied going on the rapids as its my sort of ride so off me and Ash went. I did not stop laughing so hard for the whole ride just at Ash poo-ing himself because he didn’t want to get wet and they’d turned the rapids on rough and put the waterfall on full power!! So much fun. And he got wetter than me! On a cold November night! Brilliant.

Fireworks are worth going and paying half the entry price for alone! Which is all I had to pay with 2 for 1.

3 Peak Video!

As part of our Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge was the plan to make a project video.

Voila!!

A week after we’d dragged ourselves 25 miles up three mountains we can now share a bit of that experience with everyone.

Yorkshire 3 Peaks for Diabetes UK – COMPLETED!

We did it!

In the pouring rain and very heavy cloud we completed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks in 14 hours 15 minutes!

On Saturday 18th July we woke up with the sound of heavy rain falling on the tents and looked out at our view of Pen-y-Ghent from the campsite… make that NO view of Pen-y-Ghent! We couldn’t see it at all! A whole mountain wasn’t there due to the low cloud.

At this point we were unsure if we should go or not, would it be too dangerous. However passing past the campsite and through the village of Horton-in-Ribblesdale was such a large number of walkers, all obviously setting out to do the 3 peak challenge, we decided to give it a go. We had a number of escape routes planned and we were going to assess our progress up the first peak, then decide if we should continue.

So.. with this as our view.. at 7.45am we started up the first peak, Pen-y-Ghent.

We walked through low cloud and heavy rain for around 2 hours and finally reached the top! A stone trig point on a long, level point of the peak. Pen-y-Ghent: 694 metres (2,276ft).

1st one done!

We had a quick break, checked everyone was okay and carried on.

The next peak, Whernside, is located far away from Pen-y-Ghent. We walked for hours across semi-flat terrain, crossing around a mile of treacherous bogs that you have to navigate around and jump/run over or risk sinking waist deep. But finally the great viaduct, the starting point of the next peak, and Whernside itself were in sight.

To get up Whernside you have to circle around it to then go up the side and all along the top. So it takes some time. However the climb is not very hard and we got up in around 2 hours. Whernside stands at 730 metres (2,415t) which makes it the largest peak in the Yorkshire Dales.

The weather was now clearer but rather windy and cool. At 4pm we made it to the top!

Diabetes UK gave us each a t-shirt to wear on our walk. Unfortunately it was too cold and wet to have our t-shirts on display but we whipped our coats and jumpers off for a photo.

The path down from Whernside was rather steep and a couple of us struggled with knee pain (I know that makes us sound very old). At the bottom of Whernside we were doubting if we’d make it over Ingleborough and back to the campsite in a reasonable time. At this point we were sure we wouldn’t make it in 12 hours, but how much longer was the problem. Looking at the map the only way home was over Ingleborough, or along B roads which worked out as a couple of miles longer. We decided we may as well carry on and do Ingleborough then!

Off we went, heading for the final peak, that now had an ominous cloud hanging around its summit.

As you get to the bottom of Ingleborough it climbs dramatically up, very steeply. Unfortunately I didn’t get a photo of this as I was too tired, and too busy concentrating on how the hell we were going to get up there safely. But off we went. Climbing with hands and feet we walked/climbed up the steep, rocky “path”. The only way I can describe it is like walking up very steep rock steps. As we got higher it we joined the cloud and therefore got rather wet.

A final push and we were at the top! Success! 3 peaks done!! Now just to get the hell home. At this point it was around 7pm.

Ingleborough: 723 metres (2,372ft)

We set off on the way down, not 100% sure that we were on the path as all it consisted of was a pile of rocks, and unable to see 100ft in front of us. We walked and walked, finally dropping out of the cloud, and at 10pm we reached the Pen-y-Ghent cafe. The clocking out and in point of the 3 peak challenge. We clocked in, just to say we were back safe, and dragged ourselves the extra 500 yards to the campsite. A hot shower and a beer later and we were soon fast asleep in bed.

Despite the rough weather and how long it took us I have to say, I enjoyed myself. I never found too much of the walk challenging, some of the up hill climbs were hard and the bog especially was draining. Being wet and muddy was also not nice. However the speed we did it in was down to this being the first, and longest, day walk that two of our group members had ever done. Therefore completing in 2 hours 15 minutes longer the expected time for adequate walkers is really not that bad! Considering that they’ve never walked half the distance before and the weather conditions.

The goal was to raise money for charity, and to complete it. Not to do it in a certain time. And that’s just what we did.

At the moment our total estimate raised is around £700. However if you have read my story and feel like we deserve some recognition for our achievements, please dig deep and donate!

Yorkshire 3 Peaks for Diabetes UK

On 18th July 2010 I will walking up (and down) the 3 largest peaks in Yorkshire than make up The Yorkshire 3 Peaks.

This is being done to raise money for Diabetes UK.
The charity is chosen by a friend, who has organised the event.
His Dad suffered with diabetes and sadly died when my friend was only 3 years old.
Knowing his Dad had diabetes has influenced him to organise an event to raise money for Diabetes UK and has chosen the challenge.

The Yorkshire 3 Peaks is something I’d like to do and I’m so honoured to be asked to join in and be apart of it.

Although it is not during a challenge day we will be timing ourselves. The general time for people of average ability to complete it in is 12 hours. We are aimed for under 10 hours, however it may take us longer as not all of us are superb fitness.. (more average).

So I am asking you, the general public, to please show the kindness of the human race and donate any amount of money to Diabetes UK as a sponsorship for me taking on this challenge.

I have set up a Just Giving page so donations are easy, enable the choice of allowing the charity to claim from Gift Aid, and let people see my progress and read my story.

Potters Leisure Resort

This February Half-term (2011) I have been staying at Potters Leisure Resort for their all-inclusive Sports Coaching Break!

Potters Leisure Resort is a 5 star resort that provides a major variety of weekend, mid-week and weekly breaks.

They provided top-notch sporting facilities, hotel and cabin/chalet lodging and 5* meals that combine waited on and buffet style.

I describe Potters as a Butlins/Haven Park but more adults designed and sports specific that is cheaper.

Although I say it is adult designed the half-term week is designed for the whole family from little-uns to teenagers, parents and grandparents.

I went with my boyfriend’s family and we ranged in age from 13 to 17 to 20 to mid 30s, mid 50s and grandparents age.

Everyone joined in with at least one activity and there was never anytime spent bored; even if you were just sat with a coffee watching the kids play.

Facilities include the use of courts, tables, floors and outdoor areas.

The best way I can give you an idea is by providing a list of the sports I participated in during my week:

  • Badminton
  • Tennis
  • Table Tennis
  • Indoor Bowls
  • Snooker
  • Pool
  • Curling
  • Wave Boarding (similar to skateboarding)
  • Swimming (also use of sauna & steam room)
  • Archery
  • Rifle Shooting
  • Laser Quest
  • Assault Course

There was also Dirt quad bikes, clay pigeon shooting, football coaching, dancing classes, zumba, darts, and many more!

Please do not assume that the list above is the only activities available as I could not possibly name them all and that’s pretty much all I had time to do, let alone wanted to do.

The badminton, tennis, table tennis, indoor bowls, snooker and pool was all done by booking a court/table and simply borrowing equipment in exchange for your room key or taking your own and turning up to play like at a leisure centre.

Archery and rifle shooting were held in groups at a set time where an instructor took a group to instruct and supervise.

And the swimming pool facilities were simply go in during opening hours and use. As with a leisure centre but without the cost.

As it is ALL INCLUSIVE.

Quizes, shows, dancing classes and other activities were scheduled for a time either with booking systems or simply turn up and join in. There are a number of casual seating areas overlooking various activity areas which provide bars with a range of drink and food which you pay for.

There is also little things activities dotted around such as an assault course, bouncy castles, little indoor go karts, waveboards, laser quest and all sorts at different times which you just go along to and give it a go. Some are age restricted.

All food during breakfast, lunch and dinner is inclusive with juice and water provided. All alcoholic and soft drinks require purchase.

There is evening entertainment every night for both children and adults. There is also bingo with cash prices. While the entertainment is taking place there are group activities run for children such as casual five a side football matches. The entertainment consists of dance and singing performances from guest performers and the Potters Entertainment Team. There are also comedy shows with the in-house entertainers which can include gags on the crowd, volunteers being taken up onto stage and sketch shows.

Overall I found the week remarkable and was the best holiday I have been on! It was easy to keep to yourself and enjoy your chosen sports in privacy or join in and have a go in group sports with no embarrassment. Everyone was welcoming and I found myself talking and laughing with people I had simply met through activities. I have not attended a Butlins or similar holiday, but I hear that these type of holidays which only have inclusive accomondation result in a much higher price due to the payments of activities and food, despite cheaper overall price.

The accommodation was nice and clean with spacious rooms. I particularly liked the feature of joining rooms with two-way connecting, lockable doors that can cater for families that want their own rooms but access each other.

At Potters you can participate in something as much as possible with booking and time restrains and have as many course a meal as you can possibly manage.

My boyfriend said:

If you come away from dinner not full then somethings wrong as it’s just impossible!
